It has been a great honour and pleasure to once again work with the Common Threads Wearable Art Garments. Garments selected for the exhibition are chosen from the perspective of a sculptural vision. This year with the design of the gallery space we are able to showcase 23 garments, individually curated to highlight specific features. Some garments have been completely deconstructed to explore the beautiful negative spaces set amongst light and shadow, others have been placed under blue lighting to showcase their inert luminosity. Some garments have been placed on mannequins as if on a model and others are suspended or stretch over the gallery walls without internal support.
The overall curatorial vision was to create an engaging space that allowed the garments to take on an alternative personality than on a catwalk or in the showcase. An experience that allows the audience to look closely at the exceptional craftsmanship of the garment and consider the astounding imaginations of the designers.
Sponsorship from Avalon Sail Co has allowed us to play with the internal spaces of the gallery which add another two dimensions to the exhibition.
