Way back in 1986 when I was living in Albany, a friend showed me a copy of “Glorious Knitting” by Kaffe Fassett. Wow! I raced down to the local newsagent and bought the last copy. His use of colour and pattern has inspired me ever since.
WAFTA held a wonderful talk by Kaffe last week for 300 textile enthusiasts. We were a colourful bunch, many wearing bright clothing to complement him. Kaffe spoke of his artistic journey presenting a visual feast of images that have been his inspiration and the resulting works in knitting, mosaics, rug hooking and patchwork.
It was lovely to hear stories from many friends at the event who are making quilts and have knitted from Kaffe’s patterns over the years and also those who were re-inspired to start their own work again. For me, he affirmed what I try to do in my textile practice…Look – there is inspiration everywhere, Play freely – try ideas, you can sort out the technical how later and, Just go for it – the more you do, the more you discover.
Thank you to WAFTA for organizing a great night for the Perth textile community.
